7-yr-Old relived off 6-kg Tumour

Tumour

Tumour in his stomach, Tumour in his stomach.

SEVEN-YEAR’-OLD Aniket Waghmare was leading a life less ordinary. With a protruding belly, he found it difficult even to perform his daily routine. The reason: A 6-kg tumour in his stomach.

After suffering for nearly six years — and exhausting almost all available treatment in various city hospitals — Aniket underwent surgery at Pune Municipal Corporation’s Kamala Nehru Hospital on Monday.

The surgery — the first of its kind at the hospital — lasted two hours and reduced the 20-kg boy to a mere 14 kg. Pediatric surgeon Dr. Pranav Jadhav, who conducted the surgery, said Aniket’s condition was serious as he was suffering from cancer in the kidney: “He had developed Congenital Mesoblastic Nephroma, a kind of kidney tumour.” He added that the case was a rare one.

Jadhav said the tumour had developed over the last three years and was leading to serious problems. “The tumour was putting pressure on blood vessels,” he said. The surgery was conducted for free of cost.
